Planning an ANU pathway within an Australia study application

An ANU Pathway Diploma can form the opening year of a planned Diploma-to-Bachelor sequence at The Australian National University. To build it into an Australia study application, start with the intended bachelor degree, then match the Diploma, progression requirement, English preparation and budget to that destination. The international application must cover the packaged sequence; it cannot be based on an intention to study only the Diploma.

Start with the bachelor degree you want to enter

ANU Pathway Diplomas are nested programs: students complete a standalone AQF Level 5 qualification that can lead into an aligned bachelor degree with one year, or 48 units, of credit. Progression depends on achieving the required Diploma GPA.

Pathway Diploma Aligned bachelor destination Required Diploma GPA
Diploma of Business and Economics Bachelor of Accounting; Bachelor of Business Administration; Bachelor of Commerce; Bachelor of Economics; Bachelor of Finance 4.0
Diploma of Computing Bachelor of Computing 4.0
Diploma of Politics and International Relations Bachelor of Asian Studies 4.0
Diploma of Politics and International Relations Bachelor of International Relations; Bachelor of International Security Studies; Bachelor of Political Science; Bachelor of Public Policy 4.6

This choice matters when planning the whole application. A student aiming for International Relations, for example, needs to plan for a different progression GPA from a student aiming for Asian Studies, even though both begin in the same Diploma.

Students may apply for a non-aligned bachelor degree after completing the Diploma. That application is assessed on the basis of one year of undergraduate study at ANU, with credit considered case by case. Changing direction does not carry a guaranteed year of credit.

Establish whether the Diploma is the appropriate entry route

The Diploma entry threshold is a selection rank of 70, and the pathway is intended for students in the 70–79.99 range. Students with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for a bachelor degree and cannot commence a Pathway Diploma.

Other entry backgrounds include a graded AQF Certificate IV and specified senior secondary qualifications. Qualification-specific assessment matters: a selection rank is not the same thing as a raw school mark.

The Diplomas have no subject prerequisites, and adjustment factors do not apply. Predicted results are accepted where ANU already accepts them for bachelor entry, with additional Diploma-specific provision for Tawjihi / Shahadat Al-Thanawaya Al-aama.

For an application plan, record the qualification, results and intended bachelor destination together. That makes it easier to distinguish eligibility to begin the Diploma from the academic result needed to progress.

Put the intake and English preparation on the same timeline

The current intake is Semester 1 only. Each Diploma runs for 12 months full-time across two semesters and comprises eight courses. Delivery is in person at ANU’s Acton Campus in Canberra; there is no remote option.

For Semester 1 2027, the listed international application deadline is 15 December.

Direct English entry requires IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0, or an accepted equivalent—the same standard as undergraduate entry. ANU ELICOS can be packaged with the pathway, but the Guide states that ELICOS applications for Semester 1 2027 are now closed.

An applicant still needing English preparation therefore has an unresolved timing issue for that intake. The plan needs to identify the available English result, whether it meets direct entry, and whether the proposed commencement remains workable.

Budget for the sequence beyond the Diploma

The 2027 indicative annual tuition fee is AUD 57,640 for each Pathway Diploma program. This is Diploma tuition only, not the total cost of the Diploma-and-Bachelor sequence.

The financial plan must cover the packaged study sequence. It also needs to account for accommodation and other living costs, for which no amounts are provided here.

Most students are not eligible for the ANU International Achievement Award or Vice-Chancellor’s Award during the Diploma. Scholarship assessment may take place on articulation with a Diploma GPA of at least 4.6; that threshold does not itself promise an award. The stated exception is Pacific Region citizens, who receive a 50% tuition discount under the International Achievement Award from Diploma commencement.

Use the application route that matches your current study

Students onshore completing Australian Year 12, the IB or NCEA Level 3 apply through UAC. Other international applicants apply through ANU Application Manager / Studylink.

The packaged arrangement provides one Confirmation of Enrolment for the Diploma and another for the Bachelor, supporting one visa application. This describes the application structure and does not guarantee a visa outcome.

Before submission, the plan should clearly record:

Understand what the Diploma year involves

The programs are delivered by a wholly ANU-owned Pathways entity. Students are full ANU students from commencement and take level-1000 courses shared with bachelor students, alongside ESEN1001 Academic Skills for University Study.

Support includes pre-commencement enrolment counselling, individual academic advice, monitoring of engagement and progress, referrals to campus services, and assistance with Diploma-to-Bachelor articulation. Diploma students have the same access to accommodation as bachelor students.

These arrangements support the transition into university study. The application plan still needs to keep the destination degree and its progression requirement in view throughout the Diploma year.
